Why pricing transparency matters for expats
Walking into a car workshop in a country where you do not speak the language and do not know the market is a vulnerable position. Without a reference point for what things cost, it is difficult to know whether a quote is fair, excessive or genuinely cheap because a shortcut is being taken somewhere. This guide is an attempt to give you that reference point for Kraków specifically.
All prices below are approximate figures for 2026, based on typical ranges at independent workshops in Kraków. Dealership service centres will generally be 30-70% more expensive for the same work. Prices include labour but not parts unless stated, and all figures are in PLN - divide by approximately 4.25 for a rough EUR equivalent.
Routine maintenance
Engine oil and filter change
Labour: 80-120 PLN. Parts (oil + filter): 80-200 PLN depending on specification. Total for a standard petrol engine (1.4-2.0): 180-320 PLN. Larger engines, diesel particulate filter vehicles, or premium oil specifications (BMW Longlife, Mercedes 229.5x, etc.) can push this to 400-500 PLN.
Air filter replacement
Engine air filter: parts 30-80 PLN, labour included in oil service or 30-50 PLN separately. Cabin (pollen) filter: parts 30-100 PLN, labour 50-100 PLN.
Spark plugs
Standard plugs: 10-25 PLN each. Iridium or platinum: 30-80 PLN each. Labour for a 4-cylinder: 60-150 PLN depending on accessibility. Some direct-injection engines with difficult spark plug access can cost significantly more in labour.
Coolant flush
Parts and fluid: 60-120 PLN. Labour: 60-120 PLN. Total: 120-240 PLN.
Brake fluid replacement
Fluid: 30-50 PLN. Labour: 60-100 PLN. Total: 90-150 PLN. This is one of the most undervalued maintenance items - it is cheap and has direct safety implications.
Brakes
Front brake pads (pair)
Standard parts: 60-150 PLN. Premium (Brembo, Textar, etc.): 120-300 PLN. Labour: 100-180 PLN per axle. Total for front axle pad change with mid-range parts: 200-350 PLN.
Front brake discs and pads (pair)
Standard disc pair: 100-250 PLN. Premium: 200-600 PLN. Labour: 180-300 PLN per axle. Total for a front axle disc-and-pad change with standard parts: 380-650 PLN. With premium parts on a larger car: easily 800-1,200 PLN.
Rear drum brake shoes
Parts: 60-150 PLN. Labour: 100-180 PLN. Rear disc brakes are priced similarly to front, often slightly less because rear disc callipers are smaller.
Tyres
Seasonal tyre changeover (swap wheels already on rims)
A set of four: 60-100 PLN including balancing. If tyres need to be dismounted from rims and remounted: add 80-160 PLN for the set.
New winter tyres
Budget brands: 200-350 PLN per tyre. Mid-range (Michelin, Continental, Goodyear): 350-600 PLN per tyre. Premium performance winter tyres: 600-1,000+ PLN per tyre. For a typical family car on 205/55 R16, a complete set of mid-range winter tyres fitted and balanced: 1,600-2,400 PLN.
Suspension and steering
Shock absorbers
Standard replacement unit per corner: 120-400 PLN depending on vehicle and brand. Labour per pair (front or rear): 150-300 PLN. A full set of four shock absorbers replaced: 1,200-2,500 PLN including parts and labour for a typical family car.
Ball joints
Parts: 60-200 PLN each. Labour: 100-200 PLN per side. Often replaced as part of a larger suspension service.
Wheel alignment
Four-wheel alignment check: 80-120 PLN. Adjustment if required: 80-150 PLN additional. Many workshops combine this with tyre changeover for a combined price.
Diagnostics and electrical
Computer diagnostics (OBD scan)

Battery replacement
Standard battery 60Ah: 250-400 PLN. AGM battery (required by many modern cars with start-stop): 450-800 PLN. Labour for fitting and register-coding a new battery: 60-100 PLN. Note: on many modern vehicles, a new battery must be registered with the car's electronics using diagnostic software - without this step, the charging system will not correctly manage the new battery.
Major services
Timing belt replacement
Parts (belt, tensioner, idler, water pump): 250-600 PLN for standard engines. Labour: 300-800 PLN depending on engine complexity. Total: 600-1,500 PLN for most family cars. Complex engines (interference V-engines, some large diesels) can be significantly more. This is a service where cutting costs on parts is genuinely dangerous.
Clutch replacement
Parts (clutch kit): 300-800 PLN for most cars. Labour: 400-1,000 PLN (engine or gearbox removal required). Total: 800-2,000 PLN for most front-wheel-drive cars. More for rear-wheel-drive or large-engine vehicles.
How Kraków compares to Western Europe
Labour rates in Kraków are typically 40-60% lower than in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, and 30-50% lower than in the UK. Parts prices are broadly similar for the same brands (EU single market). This makes Poland genuinely good value for major repair work, particularly if you are here temporarily and can time larger jobs during your stay. The quality of work at established independent workshops is generally comparable to Western European standards.
Additional services and costs to budget for
Wheel alignment
Four-wheel alignment (geometria kół): 80-150 PLN for the check and adjustment. Recommended after replacing suspension components, after hitting a significant pothole, or when the car pulls noticeably to one side. Running with incorrect alignment costs money in accelerated tyre wear - a few degrees of camber error can halve a tyre's service life.
Air conditioning recharge and service
AC gas recharge: 150-250 PLN depending on refrigerant type (R134a or newer R1234yf, which is more expensive). Full AC service including cabin filter replacement, antibacterial treatment and leak check: 300-500 PLN. The AC compressor itself, if it fails: 800-2,500 PLN depending on vehicle. AC service is most efficiently done in spring before the summer demand peak drives up waiting times.
Engine timing belt service
Covered in the major services section above, but worth highlighting: if you buy a used car and cannot verify when the timing belt was last changed, budgeting for immediate replacement is prudent. A belt that fails can cost ten times more to deal with than a preventive replacement. How to get a fair quote
For any significant repair, providing two pieces of information upfront gets you a more accurate quote: your car's VIN number (usually visible through the windscreen on the dashboard, or in your registration document) and a clear description of the symptoms. The VIN allows the workshop to look up exact part numbers and times for your specific engine variant - the same job can vary significantly between trim levels of the same model.
